Vista at Simi Valley was built around the belief that senior care should remain personal. That belief guides its family-owned approach, with owners and managers staying close to residents and staff, listening, responding and making decisions around people rather than spreadsheets, income reports or distant corporate oversight.

“We believe that care is pre-eminent in senior housing,” says Maddi Lewis, Vista’s Executive Director.

That philosophy shaped Vista’s development in Simi Valley, a middle-class community with many retirees and former government and municipal employees. Its founders set out to offer a more affordable senior living option without sacrificing the care and amenities associated with luxurious communities. For Vista, quality is measured by attentive support in a warm, clean and satisfying environment, not unused room space or elaborate table settings.

Building Continuity Through Staff Stability

Vista’s executive management team has largely remained in place since the community opened. Staff turnover is also low because employees are treated as part of an extended family. That continuity allows residents to form stronger relationships with familiar caregivers and gives staff a deeper understanding of the people they support.

Those relationships shape care plans over time. Long-serving team members can recognize when a resident’s condition changes or when a different level of assistance is needed. Daily interaction informs many care plan updates, while formal assessments every 90 days confirm that the support remains appropriate to each resident’s health.

The same sense of responsibility supports 24-hour coverage. Vista’s employee reporting system allows staff members to flag when they may miss a shift and gives colleagues the opportunity to step in. Because team members watch out for one another, the community rarely faces low attendance or missing personnel when residents need continuous support.

Its owners and managers are present throughout the community, asking questions and responding when concerns arise. Lewis recalls an early staff meeting when an employee mentioned that everyone disliked a painting in the room. She removed it on the spot and asked the employee to choose a replacement. The example was small, but it reflected the larger culture of listening and responding without unnecessary delay.

Creating a Community Beyond Daily Care

Vista views senior living as more than meals, housing and assistance. Residents are encouraged to remain active and connected through a full schedule of activities from morning to night.

Programs include learning opportunities, current events, cognitive activities, physical movement and recreation. Vista commits financial and staff resources to these offerings because it considers social engagement and enjoyment essential to wellbeing. The aim is not simply to fill time but to help residents build relationships, stay mentally and physically involved and enjoy daily life.

The community also works closely with local organizations and service providers. Its executive team maintains relationships throughout Simi Valley and participates in the local chamber of commerce. Those connections help Vista coordinate access to physicians, rehabilitation partners, emergency support and other local services that can play an important role in residents’ lives.

Protecting the Human Side of Innovation

Vista continues to explore technologies that will improve how the community functions. It is evaluating AI tools that could simplify routine work, draw useful insights from data and help staff approach familiar tasks in new ways.

Robotics and other emerging systems may eventually take on repetitive duties in a 24-hour care environment. The purpose is to give existing staff more time to focus on residents, relationships and direct care while preserving the human connection people value.

Technology may improve efficiency, but familiarity, attentiveness and personal interaction remain central to Vista’s approach. Care moves through the community in a clear chain: the community cares about management, management cares for staff and staff members care for residents. The result is an environment where people feel known, supported and able to thrive.
