That philosophy is rooted in the Warnes family’s longstanding connection to Morris. The principal owner was raised in the community, and his mother was once a resident at The Legacy. Today, that family connection continues through a thoughtful leadership transition, with Logan Kelly, assisted living director in residency (ALDIR), working alongside Jolynn Warnes, licensed assisted living director (LALD) as she prepares to welcome her second baby—the third generation of the family connected to The Legacy’s story.

Quality Care Starts with People

A people-first philosophy shapes every aspect of The Legacy’s operations. Caregivers, nurses, dining and activities staff, housekeepers, maintenance staff and leaders all contribute to a resident’s sense of home. When employees feel respected and supported, they are better equipped to bring patience, attentiveness and genuine care to every interaction.

For Jolynn, The Legacy’s ALD and a member of the family ownership group, creating that environment is one of leadership’s most important responsibilities.

“Our residents deserve people around them who genuinely know and care about them. As leaders, our responsibility is to create an environment where our team feels supported, valued and empowered to provide that kind of care. When we take great care of our employees, they’re able to build the relationships with residents and families that make The Legacy feel like home.”

That investment has helped create unusual continuity in an industry known for turnover. Many caregivers and nurses have served at The Legacy for more than five years. For residents, that means caregivers who know their routines, preferences, histories and communication styles—and who can recognize subtle changes in their well-being.

That familiarity is especially valuable in memory care, where predictable routines and trusted caregivers can provide an important sense of security. Experienced employees know the person behind the diagnosis and can respond with greater understanding while preserving dignity through difficult moments.

The impact can also be seen in the trust families place in the team. Tom Gausman, whose 95-year-old father returned to Morris to live at The Legacy, described what that care has meant to his family:

“Thank you for the great services you are providing my dad. It means so much to him, my brothers and me that he can be home in Morris. Your staff is exceptionally talented, and we all feel completely comfortable with the level of care they provide. I cannot express the absolute joy he felt upon moving into The Legacy and returning to the city where he has spent 91 of his 95 years. You are absolutely doing God’s work, and please know that I am deeply grateful.”

Personalized Care That Preserves Dignity and Independence

The Legacy’s care philosophy recognizes that no two resident journeys are alike. Some individuals arrive seeking greater independence with minimal support; others need increasing assistance as their health changes. Because staff build relationships over time, personalized care comes from genuinely knowing each resident, not simply following information recorded in a care plan.

Daily life is shaped around residents’ interests, hobbies and routines. Exercise, music, gardening, social gatherings and community events create opportunities to remain active, connected and purposeful.

For Logan Kelly, one resident’s love of piano illustrates why knowing the individual matters.

“We had a resident who had played piano throughout his life but rarely participated in traditional group activities. Instead of trying to fit him into our schedule, our team focused on what brought him joy. We would bring him to the piano in the common area, and he would play for residents and staff. Those are the moments that remind us that good care is about knowing the person—not just their care needs.”

That individualized approach extends to medication management, dining services, assistance with daily living and support navigating state assistance programs. Care plans evolve as residents’ needs change while continuing to honor dignity, privacy and choice.

Guiding Families Through Life’s Transitions

The Legacy welcomes families as active partners throughout their loved one’s journey. Open communication and relationships with long-term staff help families navigate changing circumstances with greater confidence.

That partnership continues when a resident’s needs evolve. The team works closely with family members, hospice providers and other care partners to ensure the resident’s wishes, dignity and comfort remain the priority.

Success, therefore, is measured by more than services delivered. It is also measured by whether residents and families feel known, supported and compassionately guided through each stage of aging.

The Legacy’s culture is deeply influenced by family ownership and the Warnes family’s longstanding ties to the community. Employees, residents, families and neighbors are viewed as part of an extended community—people worthy of care, respect and belonging.

Faith is an important part of that philosophy, but it is expressed through action rather than just doctrine.

“When we talk about faith-centered care, it’s about how we demonstrate it. Do we treat people with dignity? Do we know their story? Do they feel loved and cared for?” says Logan Kelly, ALDIR.

The same standard applies to employees. The organization believes team members who feel known, respected and cared for are better able to authentically extend those qualities to residents.

Residents are never viewed simply as room numbers or lists of care needs. They are parents, spouses, grandparents, neighbors and friends whose stories continue to shape who they are—and team members have the privilege of becoming part of those stories.

Growing Without Losing What Matters

As demand for high-quality assisted living and memory care grows, The Legacy is exploring opportunities to expand thoughtfully. But growth is not simply about serving more people. Any expansion must preserve the relationships, employee continuity and resident-centered culture that define The Legacy.

The Legacy also plans to strengthen community partnerships, continue investing in staff development and adapt thoughtfully to an evolving senior-care environment.
