It is important to provide elderly patients with activities for daily living, such as diet, exercise, and social engagements, to maintain their emotional well-being.
FREMONT, CA: As our population becomes increasingly older, thanks to the demographic bulge of the Baby Boomer generation, the need for this care has become important to families everywhere. Senior parents and other aging loved ones often require specialized health attention. However, achieving and maintaining optimal health and wellness for geriatric patients is more than a matter of just medicine. Effective care for geriatrics is a job of teamwork between health professionals and caregivers. Both come together to manage health conditions and provide a safe, positive environment for their seniors. Many health problems occur or intensify simply as a result of the aging process. In geriatric patients, these problems are often complicated by additional declines in physical or mental abilities. This often leads to a spiral where the patient cannot keep up with their care, and negative health episodes become more likely or frequent.
As they grow older, people face challenges to their health that did not exist before. Perceptual systems decline, leading to poor eyesight, hearing, and coordination. Neurological problems often start or begin to worsen. Daily activities become more of a strain, and bad health days become more common. There is simply more work involved in maintaining health and wellness.

Many conditions: Some many conditions and diseases are common in geriatric patients. Some of these conditions are acute, which means they appear suddenly as an episode, such as a urinary tract infection. Chronic conditions, such as arthritis or COPD, are another chronic condition that older people live with to the best of their ability. Additionally, dementia is an emerging condition that manifests only with advancing age.
Longer lifespans: The life expectancy of newborns in North America is now 78 years. In 1950, it was 68 years, but it has soared past 78 years today. It is expected that the elderly population will more than double in the next 20 years. The number of Americans over 90 has almost tripled since 1980. Despite a healthy lifestyle and healthy bodies, longer lifespans inevitably lead to a greater need for care as they age. Emerging conditions begin to show their symptoms sooner. Acute episodes happen more frequently. Chronic conditions require more attention or medication.
Geriatric medicine: Among the senior equation's tasks are the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases experienced by older adults. Medical geriatrics is a specialty, but geriatricians treat their patients holistically by applying a broad approach. A geriatrician examines the patient's physical, psychological, and social health, considering their lifestyle and environment. A preventative care specialist ensures that any health conditions or diseases that may occur are properly monitored, as well.
Geriatric care management: Caregivers for geriatric patients tend to be family members, but they can also obtain professional home care services when necessary. The geriatric care manager is a professional who assists families in coordinating the care of elderly loved ones. As part of their work, they assess a patient's needs, develop a care plan, identify and obtain services and resources, and monitor their progress.
