There are times when a person cannot pursue efforts to manage their condition despite advances in life-extending medical treatments and technologies. People often seek means to make the time they have left as optimal as possible in such situations. Managing pain or navigating emotional challenges are examples of this. Hospice can be of great help in these situations.
Hospice isn't necessarily a place or an institution. This philosophy of care addresses the needs of patients and their loved ones after life-extending treatments are no longer beneficial or desirable.
Benefits and Services: Hospice care is typically provided wherever the patient resides. They may reside at home, in a nursing home, assisted living facility, hospice inpatient facility, or even in a hospital.
Hospice volunteers and an interdisciplinary team of health professionals, including healthcare providers, nurses, social workers, hospice aides, etc., will deliver care in every location. In the United States, hospice services are largely defined by the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982.
The Medicare Hospice Benefit may cover the following services:
Participation of physicians: Usually, the hospice medical director coordinates care with the patient's regular healthcare provider.
Services provided by nurses: Most hospice patients are assigned a case-manager nurse who visits them one to three days per week. On-call nurses are also available to hospice patients 24 hours a day.
