Many organizations are trying to capitalize on the senior support, communal care, and assisted living industries.
FREMONT, CA: Senior living facilities can be rewarding but also have numerous challenges. It is an industry with relatively high employee and resident turnover. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 50 percent employee churn rate in this industry. Residents leave around 47 percent of their units after an average of 22 - 29 months, close to the median turnover rate.
Hiring the right people for your operations is imperative to reduce churn and prepare staff for the inevitability of high occupancy turnover. In assisted living facilities, many seniors suffer from chronic illnesses, memory or cognitive behavioral issues, and disabilities.

The type of facility or residence you serve will often require your staff to help seniors cope with long-term health conditions.
Independent living facilities: The least amount of care assistance is provided by independent living facilities. Many complexes comprise multiple townhomes, condominiums, and single-family homes with limited amenities and services. As a rule, the operations management of these communities is responsible for groundskeeping and building maintenance. This type of operation typically requires fewer employees and is less monitored than others.
Assisted living facilities: Senior living facilities that provide assisted living include a wide range of housing options and several amenities for personal care, such as food, laundry, and property maintenance. These residents may require assistance with daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, and preparing or eating meals, even if they do not need regular nursing care.
Memory care: Memory care facilities assist residents with memory impairments such as Alzheimer's or dementia. Having educated, caring staff to assist occupants with memory impairments is even more important when dealing with them. A person with dementia loses memory, reasoning, thinking, and even moving ability. Memory and other mental functions are affected by Alzheimer's, which is a debilitating and ultimately deadly disease.
Occupants with memory impairment may be exposed to additional safety risks in your facility because these conditions heavily affect brain function. Because of this, hiring the right team, including a nurse or medically trained staff member, is important.
Hiring senior living facility personnel: In the world of senior living facilities, hiring the right personnel is an important part of operations management. Every employee, from leadership to housekeeping, is essential to the operation's success and resident satisfaction because senior living operations are very people-centric.
So many people run and maintain assisted living facilities that the day-to-day can be segmented and, sometimes, political. One of the key catalysts for the high churn rate in the industry is when employees start vying for control or an established hierarchy.
