Bridging Generations Through Purpose-Built Technology

Scott Lien, CEO & Co-Founder , GrandPad

Senior Connection Champion

Editor’s Note: Older adults deserve technology that protects dignity, reduces isolation and keeps family ties within easy reach. Scott Lien’s perspective helps eldercare readers see why purpose-built design, human support and trust matter when digital access becomes part of aging well today.

Eighty-one years ago, the beaches of Normandy bore witness to one of the most pivotal events in modern history. This June, I had the profound honor of standing on those same sands with World War II veterans who returned for the 81st anniversary of D-Day. Their stories—shared in quiet detail and steady voices—spoke of courage, sacrifice, and the enduring need for connection.

Many of these veterans are GrandPad users. We are proud to donate GrandPads to those who need a bridge back to the people and moments that matter. Watching these veterans—ages 98 to 104—use our device to video call family, share snapshots from memorials, or simply check the weather back home reminded me why GrandPad exists. For seniors, connection should be easy. It should feel secure, intuitive, and human.

Designed for Seniors, Guided by Seniors

What sets GrandPad apart is not just the product—it’s the people who shape it. From day one, we have built GrandPad in collaboration with older adults through our Grand Advisors program. These seniors test features, provide honest feedback, and ensure we’re not just designing for their needs—we’re designing with their lived experience in mind.

Their input is reflected in every aspect of the device: from large tactile buttons and high-contrast displays, to the secure Circle of Trust network that prevents spam and scams. The result is an all-in-one solution that works out of the box—no passwords, no setup, no confusion.

Always-On Support, Powered by People

Behind every GrandPad is someone ready to help. Our award-winning customer care team is available to assist whenever support is needed. Whether a senior needs help placing a video call or adjusting a setting, they can connect with a knowledgeable, patient expert with the tap of a button.

Technology Grounded in Empathy

We also recently introduced Grandie Chat, an AI-powered, voice-first companion designed to support seniors with vision, mobility, or memory challenges. Grandie listens with patience, responds with warmth, and offers hands-free access to games, information, and conversation. It is a calm, consistent presence—available 24/7.

This kind of empathetic design doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of continuous listening, testing, and learning directly from those we serve.

A Mission Renewed

My time in Normandy was more than a commemorative experience—it was a reaffirmation of our mission. These veterans showed me what it means to age with dignity and purpose. They also showed me how critical it is to have simple, reliable tools for staying connected.

At GrandPad, we believe every senior deserves that. Whether it's a call, a shared song, or a question spoken aloud, those interactions should be effortless and accessible.

I returned from Normandy with a deeper sense of purpose and an even greater respect for the people we serve. We’ve always believed connection is essential to well-being. That belief is now more personal than ever.

This trip reminded me that the most powerful innovations aren’t the most complex. They’re the ones that make people feel seen, heard, and remembered.

We cannot change the past, but we can ensure its stories live on—by creating technology that helps carry them forward, with care, respect, and connection at the center.
